The first step in all Range Remediation efforts is
site preparation. Vegetation removal and visual identification of
MPPEH (Material Potentially Presenting Explosive Hazard) must take
place prior to removal activities in order to determine the extent
of contamination. In order for removal personnel to carry out their
duties, they must be able to move freely and have unrestricted view
of the ground. If shrub cover is removed down to 6" - 12' above
ground surface (AGS), OE detection work can be accomplished.
A vegetation removal method that causes a minimum of environmental
impact should be chosen. Site specific and safety considerations
govern the choice of equipment and approach to each task. The use
of armored equipment allows TES to utilize the most appropriate
methods while ensuring protection of operating personnel should
an unintentional detonation occur.
